Who We Are

QuizCrew (“we,” “us,” “our”) operates an AI-powered study companion service at quizcrew.org. Our service is designed for students aged 10 and older. Parent or guardian accounts are required for all students under 18 to manage billing, account access, and provide verifiable parental consent as required by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

What This Policy Covers

This policy describes what information we collect, why we collect it, how we use it, how we protect it, and your rights regarding that information. We take the privacy of our users — especially minors — seriously. This policy is written to be understood by parents, guardians, and students.

Information We Collect

Account Information (Provided by Parent/Guardian)

• Name and email address (parent/guardian)
• Payment information (processed by Square — we never see or store credit card numbers)
• Student's first name or chosen display name
• Student's grade level and subjects

Student Interaction Data (Generated Through Use)

• Chat messages between the student and their AI study bot
• Session timestamps and duration
• Subjects and topics studied
• Uploaded materials — processed for content extraction only, not stored as raw files
• Bot personalization choices (bot name, tone, personality preferences)
• Test and quiz results generated within sessions

Derived Learning Data (Generated by Our System)

• Student learning profile — explanation styles, error patterns, study habits, confidence signals, retention tracking. Personal to each student, never shared.
• Aggregated teaching insights — anonymized data about effective teaching approaches. No student identifiers included.
• Content library entries — academic knowledge (formulas, definitions, worked examples). No student identifiers attached.

Automatically Collected Information

• Browser type and device information
• IP address (security and fraud prevention only)
• Session activity logs (debugging and reliability)

How We Use Your Information

To Provide the Service

• Powering AI study conversations
• Building and maintaining each student's personal learning profile
• Generating quizzes and tracking progress
• Processing uploaded materials to help with studying

To Improve the Service

• Analyzing anonymized, aggregated session data to improve teaching approaches
• Building our academic content library from extracted educational material
• Monitoring for technical issues and improving reliability

We Do NOT Use Your Information To

• Sell personal data to anyone, ever
• Display advertising or target ads
• Build marketing profiles of students
• Share identifiable student data with third parties
• Train external AI models

How AI Processes Student Data

QuizCrew uses third-party AI services (such as Anthropic's Claude) to power the study bot and analyze sessions.

• Student messages are sent to the AI provider's API to generate responses
• After each session, conversations are analyzed to extract learning insights
• We do not opt in to any AI provider's data training programs. Our API agreements prohibit use of student data to train or improve provider models
• AI providers process data in transit and do not retain conversation data after generating responses

Important: Under the updated COPPA Rule (effective April 22, 2026), using children's personal information to train AI requires separate verifiable parental consent. QuizCrew does not use student data for AI training.

Student Learning Profiles

Each student has a personal learning profile that improves over time. This profile contains information about how they learn best — not what they said in specific conversations.

• Only accessible within their QuizCrew experience
• Parents can request to view it at any time
• Used solely to personalize study sessions
• Deleted when the account is deleted

Data Sharing

We share personal information only in these limited circumstances:

• Square — payment processing only
• AI providers — conversation data for responses and analysis only
• Hosting providers (AWS) — infrastructure, data stored in the United States
• Legal compliance — if required by law or to protect user safety

We do not sell personal data. We do not share personal data with advertisers.

Data Retention

• Account data — retained while active, deleted within 30 days of deletion request
• Chat messages — retained for learning profiles. Parents may request deletion anytime.
• Learning profiles — deleted when account is deleted
• Aggregated insights — retained indefinitely (no personal information)
• Payment records — retained as required by tax/financial regulations

Children's Privacy (COPPA Compliance)

QuizCrew is designed for students aged 10 and older. We comply fully with COPPA and the updated COPPA Rule (compliance deadline April 22, 2026).

Parental Consent

• Account creation requires a parent or guardian for all users under 18
• Students cannot self-register. No pathway exists for a child to use the service without parent setup
• Consent is specific and informed. Parents see clear disclosure and must affirmatively confirm

Parental Rights

• Review: Request a complete data export at privacy@quizcrew.org
• Delete: Delete your child's account and all data within 30 days
• Withdraw consent: Delete the student account to stop all data collection

Data Protections for Children

• Students do not provide an email address
• No advertising
• No data sales
• No AI training on children's data
• No indefinite retention of personal data
• Minimal collection — only what's needed for the service

FERPA

QuizCrew is a direct-to-consumer service. We do not contract with schools or school districts. FERPA does not apply to QuizCrew.

Data Security

• All data transmitted over HTTPS
• Database access restricted and authenticated
• Payment processing by Square (PCI DSS compliant)
• Access to production systems limited to authorized personnel

No system is 100% secure. We will notify affected users of any data breach as required by law.

Your Rights

Parents and Guardians

• Access your child's information including learning profile
• Delete your child's account and all data
• Withdraw consent by deleting the student account
• Request information about collected data and its use
